In the wild: Due to Rain Forest destruction in Africa only 20 million acres of chimpanzee habitat remains

In captivity: In 1995 a Federal Government moratorium was placed on paying for new baby chimpanzees at all government facilities, this moratorium was extended indefinitely in 2007.

The Reason? Money.

How many chimps are there?

In the wild: Chimpanzees have declined from 2 million in 1900 to 1 million in 1960 to 150,000 in 2005. Extinction in the wild is predicted by 2030 except for in a few small African sanctuaries with several hundred chimpanzees.

In captivity: Approximately 2000 chimpanzees are in captivity in the U.S.; of those 1200 are government owned and non-breeding. Other countries only have chimpanzees in zoos and the numbers are dwindling.
